| Blog post: Vilcabamba, Ecuador Part II At home in the States we have such an enormous variety of food from all over the world that we rarely stop to think of where it came from, or of how it came to be. The food culture here in Ecuador, particularly in so small a town in the mountains, feels quite different. I am everyday naively surprised by something new. When we eat a pineapple, we cut off the top and plant it to grow another. You can judge whether fruit is about to ripen by when the birds start to give them a try. Why was I never aware that the black spot on the bottom of each banana is the remains of a beautiful white flower? Oh, and last week Lewis met a guy who has an intentional living community 2 hours´ hike from town (link to his site here) who told him that the fruit trees that grow out of seeds in humanure are so healthy and quick growing that it would be worth his time and money to host dinner parties up there, just to reap the benefits his guests might leave behind in his compost (for lack of a better way to say it).
