I bet safe and best can be mutually exclusive. You could choose a rental service that would provide the driver often at a small cost. Because even though you will get advice in this forum, given that you are still new in the place, you will need a local to take you round.I said the two terms are exclusive because you might find a road that is good but not safe or vice versa. It seems to me then that the rains can be a menace!

"Roads"
You should really be careful about driving yourself. From Quito to the coast you will be driving through the Andes which can be intimidating if you are not used to it. Also be aware that if you are in an accident here, you can be jailed even if you were not at fault, until the police decide who will be charged. And that is a very slooowwwww process here. Much safer to hire a driver at $50 to $60 dollars a day, and let him take the risk, then to do it yourself. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
