| A Rural Visit by an Aspiring Doctor While hiking with a rural Ecuadorian medical team, I felt like I was a general practitioner from the late 1800s on his way to make a house call. Modern medicine is relatively new to this region of Ecuador, so I perceived that its unfamiliarity to the local community would make for an interesting encounter. We arrived to a shelter that looked like an abandoned tree house and met with a 25 year-old pregnant mother of six children. Although we were complete strangers to Maricela and despite her extreme poverty, she kindly welcomed us into her home. She confided in us and let us examine her children. When I asked Maricela what her hopes were she quickly responded, “good health and a better future for my children”; the latter being clearly dependent on the former. My experience with the EBAS team opened my eyes to some of the social, economic, political, and cultural barriers that prevent rural populations from receiving quality and equitable care. One question that was often brought up was whether the people living in the rural Ecuadorian communities were receptive to "modern" or "western" medicine. I found the people of Sarahuasi, Pilalo, and Guasaganda to be very open to whatever assistance that was available to them. However, I could notice that the EBAS teams are still in the process of establishing trust with some of the members of the community. |
| It really touches my heart when I saw videos of native people from rural areas specially those in remote areas. The kind of living that they had since they are too far in the modern world. I loved this post that shows a mere concern to the welfare of the less fortunate people. This is a humanitarian mission to help and give medical assistance to the people who are less fortunate. This a healthy mission towards the people of Ecuador to let them aware and be educated about diseases and medicines. |
| Hi there guys. I was wondering if I can be able to find some good and useful information in here with regards to living in the rural areas in Ecuador. I have been thinking of moving in there after retirement and so it would be great to hear from all of you guys with regards to my concern. Any useful links would be great as well. Thanks a lot and have a great day to all. |
| "Beach House in Ecuador"
Hi Menchie, I have heard that Cuenca is becoming a charming city for foreigners to retire. I will personally suggest as well to check out Vilcabamba, it is an amazing place to live ....so peaceful! It is like life happens slower over there. You have to take care about crimes there...there are a lot of robberies. Do not believe anybody who tells you the contrary. It is a problem and you have to be careful about that...The government has invested a lot to fight this criminality rate...I hope it succeeds. I am Ecuadorian and registered into this site to promote our beach house. Most of my family is abroad and we need to rent or sale part of our property. If you ever feel like moving to the beach or spending some vacations there, please take a look at facebook/casadeplaya We do try to keep things easier so we hired a security guard... Regards, Ruth |
| Rural living is quite ideal to many people most especially those who are looking for a peaceful and simply life. These days there are already health missions pursued to these rural areas like in Ecuador. In this way, medical practitioners cater the needs of the local people especially about health care so that they can be given proper advice how to maintain good health. Thanks for the post. Great day. |
| Ecuador is definitely a great place. It is where you can find a lot of interesting tourist spots and travel destinations that are perfect for vacation. Since I was young, I have always wanted a rural living because it is where I can find peace of mind and the true meaning of happiness. I am glad that Ecuador promotes better living in the rural areas. Maybe sometime I'll go there. |
