I am a single female recently retired and interested in the possibility of living in Ecuador for at least 1-2 years. I have pets that I would be bringing with me and would want to live on my own instead of with a family. I am thinking I would be best off living in Quito where I'd be near veterinarian care and able to work part time teaching English.I'd be very interested in knowing about any special challenges I would experience because of being female, etc. and advice.

I am a single man soon to retire to Ecuador after 35 years of practicing holistic medicine in the USA. I want to start a Bed & Breakfast on 120 acres and build a conference center for community affairs, seminars and the like. Part of the land will be targeted for a children's play park, some for gardening, some for livestock, some for windmills, some for herbs - next to the kitchen and community dining room. That is my dream. I want to make sure that those that are local will benefit from the center as employees. I would like to be in communication with you for any advise you may have for me. In turn - any services you may want from me - will be gladly offered.
I will be in Ecuador from December 19th to the 29th. to see for myself the condition in the community and the ease or difficulty to purchase said land near Quito.
I await your communication.
Warmly,
Dr. Van Beveren

Hello, Dr. Van Beveren, Thank you for responding to my inquiry!
What an amazing journey you are embarking on. Great goals. Where in Ecuador do you think you will have your center?
Since writing my message I have been exploring internet connections in Cotacachi. It's pretty much all a mystery to me right now, but as I learn more I'm getting a better sense of what I can handle initially and not. There will be a steep learning curve and I want to give myself time to enjoy the process.
One of the things I am interested in is the humane treatment of animals and I'm concerned about my lifestyle choice working well for my pets.
Where do you expect to go in Ecuador in you December visit. I'm envious.

Check with Gary Phillips at www.pro-ecuador.com ... he was very helpful to me. Cotacachi is a neat place with a small ex-pat community.

try posting the website as a link. it would be much more helpful that way.

How old are you Ms. Charsley, mind if I ask? Isn't that sad, to live on your own all alone? Your pet can't help if ever you'll be in need. I hope you don't take this negatively.

To Charlsey from Sacramento, How are your explorations coming?
Your post caught my eye, because I, too, am a single woman looking to live in Ecuador. I've been investigating Cotacachi--and quite intently.
I saw you were invited to catch info. from Gary at Pro-Ecuador.com--a wonderful site. There is a Gary at EcuadorLiving.com, also, and that site is extremely helpful, too. Both site owners live in the Cotacachi area.
FYI, for 30 years, I lived in the Bay Area, and am very familiar with Sacramento.

Is Ecuador a good place to go when you retire? Would it be better than the U.S.? What does it have to offer that makes it so wonderful, is it the climate?

Nowhere else on earth will you find so much natural diversity – and all the fun that accompanies it – in so tiny a place. Ecuador is the second-smallest country in South America, but its range of offerings is no less than astounding. In one day’s drive you can journey from the Amazon Basin across glaciated Andean volcanoes, down through tropical cloud forest and into the sunset for a dinner of ceviche on the balmy Pacific coast. One day you’ll pick through hand-woven wool sweaters at a chilly indigenous market in Otavalo; the next day you’ll sweat all over your binoculars while spying on howler monkeys in the Amazon jungles of the Oriente. For nature lovers Ecuador is a dream, with exotic orchids and birds, bizarre jungle plants, strange insects, windswept páramo (Andean grasslands), dripping tropical forests and the fearless animals that hop, wobble and swim around the unique, unforgettable Galápagos Islands.

I too am a single woman and have had ideas for a while about moving to equador or somewhere affordable and beautiful and being able to live on less. I'm actually a Brit but thinking of moving. I checked out several places a few years ago when money was a little easier, but didn't make any final decision because it just seems such a hard decision to make all by yourself. I mean a move like that is just so hard. Especially when everyone else who doesn't think that way thinks I'm crazy.! I just want a more simple life, but can't make up my mind if I want to live in the mountains, near the beach, in a villa a condo - so many things to think about.
Health care is good I hear in Panama - is it in Equador?.
It's so much harder being single making all the decisions (especially a woman)and coming up with 100% of the money as well. I found a good site for people who are looking for likeminded people like myself which I joined and they are gettng more and more resources and its a place you can find partners for traveling, investing or romance with. It's all free. The site is: retiringsingles.com
I'm very excited because this Global Village or retiringsingles.com is growing and I've been in contact with several men and women and getting their views and feedbacks - I might even be going with another lady that I met on the site to check out Panama with her in a couple of months. It's just nice to be able to relate to people with similar thoughts and situations.

Here are the reason why it is ideal to retire in Ecuador:In Ecuador, not only can you retire on little money, you can also live very well. Retiring in Ecuador offers something for everyone, and at prices unheard of in North America and Europe. Golf on breathtaking courses so uncrowded you'll never have to make a tee time. Indulge in a gourmet meal in a world-class restaurant. Why not? The cost is about what you'd pay for bottled water and an appetizer in a restaurant in Los Angeles or New York. Plus, the fresh fruits and vegetables you find overpriced at specialty "organic" shops up north sell at local Ecuadorian markets for pennies.

Going independent is a choice that most people find hard to settle upon. It requires the will and power to go it alone in major things. Retiring in Ecuador should not be hard but a bit tricky for the expatriates but I am sure if you do all you can to seal the loopholes, all will be well. If you are thinking of posting a link, it will be easier for you to put in the correct box. That having been said, is there an ideal retirement age especially for the case of Ecuador?

Of course for the single lady to have considered moving out on her own should have taken enough brainstorming and weighing of options. I like the way you are exploring your options yet at the same time having a really open mind. The website Jack provided seems like a good one but had he posted it as a link, it'd have been much easier. A professional's word(and I presume he is one in this case)will save the day in the situation. Here is the link to Jack's website

If it is that I can retire on very little money and yet, still live reasonably well in Ecuador, then this country is surely the ideal place for me to consider. I do truly hope that the case remains as such, in this very beautiful a place, especially if ever I were to arrive at the ripe old age for retirement.
Comment #15 Eve (63.176.159.78) - 12/20/09 11:57
Is it really one of the best places in this region for retirement, by the way? Can it truly be considered as such?

I don't know much about the world, where is Ecuador actually located?

Whether single or married Ecuador is a wonderful place to be for retirement nice for relaxing and interesting for immigrants. But being a single woman there is the added bonus of the exotic, sexy, tanned latin/ mixed men. Enjoy them trust me.

There are quite a number of interesting places from all over the world to retire to. One should consider the prices of commodities or the cost of living but by now you probably know about this. what I am curious about is how much is Ecuador's cost of living and economy doing? Can expats living in the country freely set up blogs that will tell the world of their experience in the country? That is what I am eager to find out.

"looking to retire in Cuenca/cotacachi"
My hubby passed on untimely.I'm considering Ecuador for retirement and maybe later on be joined by my daughter/grandaughter who lived in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize for many years. It's getting to be expensive there. However, my hubby & I had been there 16 times already but for me toretire in that country is too pricey...
Thank you..hope to get some more infos of Ecuador..
