| Yahoo! Answers: can i bring food with me to another country? I am traveling to Ecuador tomorrow on a medical mission and will be staying with a host family. I would like to bring them some homemade goodies (banana bread and choc chip cookies)...i am traveling with a large group and do not want to be the source of a hang-up. Can anyone shed some definitive light on this for me? Ideally I'd rather bring it carry-on than check it, but I'd do it however I had to. |
| Yes, I think so. you can bring some foods to another country provided it is not too much. In fact, that is so kind and so thoughtful of you. I am very sure that your host family will really appreciate your effort of bringing something for them. And they will surely accommodate you during your stay. I think bringing something like chips or bread won't hurt at all. Good luck to you! |
| "Good luck!"
I think anything I'd consider food... ie: fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, etc will be strongly frowned upon. However, packaged, processed stuff is probably ok, ie: candy, unopened canned stuff, etc. You may run into arbitrary airline clerks with a different idea. Once the check-in clerk on a flight to Brazil insisted that we could not take any: food, chocolate or medicine in our check-in luggage. Of course the security check made no inquiry about those items and once passing through security we were dumped into the duty free shop which sold that forbidden chocolate! But it is not so much the airlines you have to worry about, but the customs service upon your arrival. |
| Why bring food if you can taste a new set of food in the place that you are to visit. There are lots of good food in Ecuador that you might like. Whenever I go visit a place, I would surely taste their local delicacies in there. My trip will never be completed without tasting their food. Anyway, thanks for sharing in here and have a great day ahead to all. |
| Just pack your food properly and check it in if you want to bring it to Ecuador. People will get mad at you if you don't put it in a good package and if you will not check it in. Local snacks that are already vacuum-packed may be inserted in your hand-carried baggage if it has not foul smell. Having said these, don't bring too much food because you might end up paying more for excess baggage. |
| That's right Frances. I think you will be allowed to bring such kind of food abroad as long as you place it in a good package and with seal. The problem sometimes is that some people would complain of the smell of food inside the plane, which might even make them feel sick for a long trip. So to avoid such cases, be responsible to pack your food well. |
