HI, My husband Randy and I will be visiting friends in Cuenca, Ecuador in November. We are considering moving to Ecuador in 4-5 yrs. We have researched alot of books but realize that there are many areas that we have not even considered as possible places to live. We have taken the attitude that we should rent and travel and determine where we like to stay during the different seasons. So far we have determined that Loja, Montanita, Cuenca and Villacamba look very intersting. These all can be touristy so I was wondering if any of you out there could suggest towns that are a bit modern but still "sleepy" and would be amenable to "gringos". We love our Vespa scooters, so we are also going to look into the feasibility of taking them with us or buying scooters there. Do any of you know about buying these type of vehicles in Ecuador? We would appreciate any response that we get. Karen & Randy

im not too sure on where to buy scooters in ecuador.. but i do know that most major dealers do offer shipping pretty much anywhere you want it to go.. so here is a site that sells alot of scooters. check in with them and see if they ship to where you want it to go.. good luck on everything!

We are traveling in Ecuador currently and we spent one week in Vilcabamba. It's very beautiful and there are a lot of Gringos there. Some have moved there to live in gated, planned communities and others are living/working/playing in the local community. It's quite small, with most of the interaction happening around the main square. We felt very safe there but didn't have much interaction with Ecuadorian Nationals. We spend one afternoon in Loja and it seemed like a nice town. Now we are in Banos, and we love it. It's a bigger town, in a gorgeous setting, with a nice variety of shopping, restaurants, nightlife and amazing array of outdoor activities. In the next few days we're going to try to connect with expats living here. We too are looking for a place to relocate in the next few years.

I have heard that Ecuador is a great place to go and visit and stay, but I would look further into this and hopefully if you go you do enjoy yourself and have a great time.

For Karen. I think it's better to buy a new scooter than bringing your old scooter with you.

I agree with Dean. Its better that you buy a new scooter rather than to buy a new one. If your going to pay charges for your scooters transportation then its better to buy a new one.

About, to visit other place, I know that there are nice communities of "gringos" in Cotacachi, over there everything is on bicycle i'm not sure about scooters, I know some nice proyect that has a nice view near of rivers, pretty nice

Definitely try to but a new one. Sell your old ones, travel to your desired location, and then get some new wheels for yourself. It would cost you an arm and a leg to ship one scooter, let alone two.

Yes, it is a good idea, why not just buy a new one instead of paying travel fees for a scooter. I bet there are lots of scooter store in Ecuador, or you might even try to consider buying second hand scooters. Buying used one saves you lots of money. But be cautious when buying old, used scooters, try to be a little picky and scan all the stock to have best buys.
