| Backpacking South America, picking the right clothing.? Im am planning a backpacking trip down to SA this coming Spring. I'm planning to spend about a month exploring Ecuador and Peru. One thing that is kind of giving me a hard time is what kind of clothing I should wear. I would rather blend in and not stick out and look "touristy". Any advice or tips would be appreciated. |

Chances are that your skin color will cause you to stand out even more than anything else... but if you are worried about your clothes... pack every light and buy some stuff locally... keep in mind that dress, skin color, etc will vary between Peru and Ecudador and be vastly different in the rural areas and big cities. |
| wear anything that is between the greens and the browns. people in South America may like festivals but they like to tone it down during regular days. the area is hot during summer so wear light-colored shirts so you'll feel comfortable when looking around. by the way, stay away from those fisherman hats that most tourists wear, it'll easily give your cover away. |
| Thanks for the tips there jeiyra, I do not want to get over dressed if I am to go to any place. I know that it is a little warm in the country and so I am packing only light clothing wiht light colors as well. I have this question though. Is it always sunny in there? Or does it rain almost all of the time? Good day to all. |

The weather depends on WHERE you are... You can find snow or tropical beaches just a short distance from each other in Colombia... and maybe Ecuador too.You cannot pick the right hiking clothes based on going to South America, but you need to do it based on the regions and areas within those regions you will be visiting and possibly the time of year as well. Mountain peaks are COLD even in "tropical" areas! |
| Backpacking is really an interesting activity. I sometimes do this together with my cousins. We spend some time in another place and we enjoy nature tripping. Actually, there is no required dress code for this. I always believe that comfort should always comes first. Regardless of what color you wear for as long as you are comfortable with it, then there's no big deal with it. Just enjoy your trip and take care. Happy holidays! |
