Blog post: This is Where I Live

Thank author of this post/commentSome things I have heard, overheard, seen, noticed or read about Ecuador in the past ten days or so:

1. 8 out of 10 Ecuadorian women have been a victim of physical, mental or sexual violence in their lives.

Thank author of this post/comment"Domestic violence in Ecuador"

I think this is a really great blog, I'll be reading more of it when I get the time. The writer says she encounters a lot a sexual comments and attention living in Ecuador, does anyone else have any comments on that?

"machismo (male chauvinism) is alive and well here. Having personally been victim to absurd amounts of hissing, honking and hollering (preciosa, linda, guapa, mamacita….) at by Ecuadorian men, I can gather that females here are considered objects of male desire more than living, breathing human beings."

I think if you're not used to that kind of attention that could feel very intimidating indeed

Oh this is very alarming. Women should be taken care of and not abused. In the Philippines there is a law entitled " Anti violence against women and children act" I think there is a law in other countries too similar like in the Philippines. I hope that this problem can be solved soon.

Thank author of this post/comment"Reply to Jena"

Jena's article raises a number of solid issues. As a recent arrival, and one still working on learning the language, I can't comment on the freedom of the media point because I haven't read the provisions. It can happen that those interpreting legilation put a spin on it to make it sound better or worse than it is. I don't know if that's the case, however, if the reports are even close to the truth there is reason for concern. My bigger issue is with the claim of enhanced press freedom in the US which has been a bastion of liberal left leaning reporting for so long it is hard to remember when the press just reported. As well, you don't have to look very deeply to see stories that the main line media ignores such as any sound criticism of obama or his team. I know about the "and then they came for me" scenario but I think it will be a long time before any of the concerns about Correa have any dramatic effect on the lives of expats. Having said this, the sexual abuse issue is serious and is being addressed by public awareness campaigns which is a first step to address this blight. I didn't see the point about the difference in club prices which is consistent with any major city anywhere and not exclusive to Quito.

Being violent and abusing women is very embarrassing thing to know. Women should be loved by everyone and not to be hurt by someone. I think in other country like in Ecuador for sure there is also a law which is "anti-violence against women and children act". I hope that kind of incident will be solve as soon as possible because as a woman, it also makes me feel bad to know that they are abusing women.

I have to agree to all of you guys, we certainly have to respect the rights of women. I have two sisters and one daughter and I would not want them to be treated like that and be abused with anyone. And so I make sure that I take care of my wife and love her with all due respect. This way I know that good karma would let my daughter have a loving husband as well.
